Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were widely used in Australia between 1950 and 1980, and can be found in most pre-1985 buildings and workplaces. Even after the National Asbestos Ban in December 2003, imported products and materials may still contain asbestos. Inhalation of asbestos fibres poses serious health risks, including cancer and chronic respiratory disorders.
To mitigate the risks of asbestos exposure, all States & Territories have significant asbestos legislation in place. Legislation sets out requirements for persons with management or control of a workplace.
- Conduct an Asbestos Audit to identify ACMs.
- Document an Asbestos Register (ACM type, location, and risk assessment).
- Obtain a Clearance Certificate after ACM removal.
- Conduct Asbestos Air Monitoring if there are doubts about exposure risks.
- Provide Asbestos Awareness Training for workers who might disturb ACMs.
- Document an Asbestos Management Plan (what will be done, when, how, and by whom).
